Further information on Critical Illness Cover

What is Critical Illness Cover?

Critical illness cover pays out the sum assured (benefit amount) if you are diagnosed with a specified critical illness that meets the policy claim terms.

Critical illness can be taken out as Stand-alone cover that only pays the sum assured if you are diagnosed with a critical illness that meets the policy definition and then survive for at least 28 days to make the claim valid (some policies are only 14 days). The survival period normally applies to stand-alone critical illness cover or where the death benefit is a different amount from the critical illness benefit. With Stand alone cover on death no benefits are paid.

Critical illness cover can also be combined with life cover so that the cover pays out a lump sum if you either die or are diagnosed with a critical illness that meets the policy definition this is commonly called Accelerated cover.

Stand alone critical illness cover can sometimes be more expensive than accelerated critical illness cover, so its worth getting a quote to compare cost for both options even if you don't need or want the life cover element.

Are all Critical Illness Policies the Same?

No. It's not just about having enough cover in place in terms of £'s. It's about having 'quality' cover. Cover that will pay out when you need it. Critical illness cover varies in terms of the illnesses that are covered and the terminology that could with one provider mean you have a valid claim and the other you don't.

Most critical illness plans are built around a list of 23 the most common serious conditions anyone may suffer. These conditions are:-

  • Alzheimer's disease
  • Aorta graft surgery
  • Benign brain tumour
  • Blindness
  • Cancer
  • Coma
  • Coronary artery bypass surgery
  • Deafness
  • Heart attack
  • Heart valve replacement or repair
  • HIV infection
  • Kidney failure

  • Loss of speech
  • Loss of hands or feet
  • Major organ transplant
  • Motor neurone disease
  • Multiple sclerosis
  • Paralysis of limbs
  • Parkinson's disease
  • Stroke
  • Terminal illness
  • Third degree burns
  • Traumatic head injury

Some comprehensive policies will include a list of other, less common conditions, such as:-

  • Angioplasty
  • Aplastic anaemia
  • Bacterial meningitis
  • Cardiomyopathy
  • Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease
  • Diabetes
  • Liver failure
  • Loss of independence
  • Mastectomy definition
  • Open heart surgery
  • Pre-senile dementia
  • Progressive supranuclear palsy
  • Rheumatoid arthritis
  • Severe lung disease

Other policies such as the "Cancer Cover" offered by Virgin only provide cover for TWO critical illness. Supermarkets have for some time been offering critical illness cover Tesco a main player in particular offer critical illness cover that falls short in terms of the illnesses covered compared to the market average.

Another surprise was the UK's number one price comparison website only provided critical illness quotes with 4 companies, Synergy, Aviva, LV= and Legal & General. From a consumer point of view this is a disappointment especially as one of those providers offers below average cover, another two have more exclusions on their critical illness than the norm and the third is the only remaining worthy consideration. However when you then compare price why would you accept inferior cover just to save one or two pounds a month? QuoteMe4 offer comprehensive critical illness cover from the whole market, quote, compare get covered get cashback why go anywhere else?

To help consumers The Association of British Insurers (ABI) has specified 'model wordings' for the 23 ABI defined conditions (as of April 2006). In addition to these most plans will include cover for other conditions. It is important when considering a critical illness policy that you fully understand the scope of the cover.

PruProtect provide cover for 35 critical conditions. Each of those conditions are then sub-divided so that the claim amount is depending on the serverity so that you can receive a lump sum payment of between 10% and 100% of your Serious Illness Cover depending on how severe your illness is. As a result PruProtect cover 154 conditions (on their comprehensive plan) within 35 specified critical conditions which is unique or 93 critical conditions with their primary cover.

Critical illness - What Other Options are Available?

Options available include indexation, waiver of premium and guaranteed insurability.

Indexation
Each year the sum assured (benefit amount) will increase automatically.

Waiver of premium
You can choose to include Waiver of Premium Benefit. This benefit pays your premiums if you are too ill to work after the waiting period typically 6-months or more as a result of illness or injury.

Guaranteed insurability

Life - Critical Illness Cashback Terms

Use us for your life insurance or critical illness term cover and we will give you cashback after acceptance of your policy.

  • Cashback is paid after the second month and once you have made the 2nd monthly payment.
  • Policy premium must be £25 per month or more to qualify for guaranteed £100 cashback. Lower premiums will attract cashback but this is likely to be less than the £100.
  • The cashback is a rebate of our commission, which is paid in advance of the earnings period typically 48 or 24 months depending on the provider. Cashback is only paid on the basis that you maintain the cover for the commission earnings period or longer. Should the policy stop or be altered within this earnings period the provider may request repayment of any unearned commission from us and you agree to repay on our demand your percentage share based on the percentage paid to you as cashback.
  • We reserve the right to delay paying the cashback until after the commission earnings period if we suspect the policy has been taken out for the sole purpose of acquiring the cashback with no intent of maintaining the cover.
  • These cashback terms do not affect your Statutory rights.
  • We reserve the right to alter these terms at anytime and if we do shall take immediate effect.
Cashback terms last updated 7th July 2010

Once you have obtained a quote please send us an email with your quote or you can call us on 0800 022 6571 with your quote reference and we can then confirm the cashback that will apply to your new policy.
